Wonderland is a journey, a work in motion. Wonderland visits a city, meets the population, records images and sounds. Sometimes as impressions, sometimes as interviews. Wonderland records what is going on, and transposes the sounds and impressions into a unique contemporary performance.
Nicolas Humbert is a famous filmmaker who has a big passion for contemporary creative music. His film «Step Across the Border« from1990 is a central document about the New York avant-garde scene of the nineties. This film has won numerous prizes and has won cult status.
Wonderland is a continuation of «Step across the border». Wonderland follows three young musicians from the group DAS KAPITAL on their tours around Europe. But this time instead of fixing the impressions in one film, Humbert makes the choice of participating directly in the concerts. The images he makes during the journey and the preparations for the evenings concert are manipulated live and projected on a large screen beside the musicians. To balance this screen and the very realistic images Humbert usually works with, he has invited youg German video artist Martin Otter to join him on the project. Otter works in a more abstract way with light and shadow and shapes and like Humbert he manipulates the images in front of the audience.
The trio Das Kapital plays an expressive and contemporary free jazz or should we say free rock? The trio counts three virtuosi instrumentalists who each is making a name for himself in the world of creative music. Their music is largely improvised, and uses elements from all the styles and forms that the musicans have touched through the years.
